Hoax: Planetary Alignment On Jan 4, 2015 Will Decrease Gravity For 5 Minutes
An internet hoax created by satirical web publication Daily Buzz Live claims that planetary alignment on Jan 4, 2015 will decrease gravity for 5 minutes causing partial weightlessness. This is entirely false.
DailyBuzzLive.com is a satire web publication who seeks to gain website traffic in order to generate website revenue via website impressions and cost-per-click advertisements by causing anxiety, shock, or fear. The website literally generates income based off of publishing false information it feels internet users are susceptible to click on.
The story published by DailyBuzzLive.com is not true. The websites claims that NASA sent out a tweet on December 14th that says “January 4th, 9:47 AM PST, the long awaited planetary alignment will cause a gravitational fluctuation that will leave you weightless for a short period of time #beready;” However, NASA did not tweet this misinformation and the photo DailyBuzzLive uses was fabricated.
You may have noticed a friend post this fable on Facebook. While the website and story itself are harmless, it should be noted that sharing false information does not do any good.
According to British astronomer Patrick Moore, at exactly 9:47 PST AM on January 4th, Pluto will pass directly behind Jupiter, in relation to Earth. This rare alignment will mean that the combined gravitational force of the two planets would exert a stronger tidal pull, temporarily counteracting the Earth’s own gravity and making people virtually weightless. Moore calls this the Jovian-Plutonian Gravitational Effect.
Moore told scientists that they could experience the phenomenon by jumping in the air at the precise moment the alignment occurred. If they do so, he promised, they would experience a strange floating sensation.
